the first upgrade from a squatter was a bit of scaffolding erected over the hole with a seat fastened to the top. This in many ways was quite handy as it created a "bi-cultural bog" as the scaffolding was portable and could be moved out of the way for sqautees.. The photo below was the next generation facilitiy available for those who chose to sit-shit, basically a modern crapper without the rear mounted cistern. A nearby vessel of some type holds the water and a scooper is provided to "flush" out the bowl. When this was first introduced to the region one often enter the facility to find the seat broken. Our Asian brothers hopped up on the seat for a squat. Step 2 was to teach them to lift the seat to squat graduating to the sitting-shitting posture. If you ever sat on one of these that had an unnoticed break you will understand the saying "bitten in the ass by the bog seat"
