khon kaen countdown to 2011 crapper bog

This bog was the highpoint of the trip to khon kaen Countdown to 2011.
Larry at khon kaen retirement has already commented on the fest itself. The only other thing to note is the location. This is arguably the most congested intersection in town as well as one of the most dangerous. I guess this can be seen as a holiday "culling the population festival"

Anyhow back to the bog. This one was one of the most dangerous for westerners as many would fall off it. Westerners who sat on the rim were known to contract some interesting dermatological conditions.

semi modern bog

the first upgrade from a squatter was a bit of scaffolding erected over the hole with a seat fastened to the top. This in many ways was quite handy as it created a "bi-cultural bog" as the scaffolding was portable and could be moved out of the way for sqautees.. The photo below was the next generation facilitiy available for those who chose to sit-shit, basically a modern crapper without the rear mounted cistern. A nearby vessel of some type holds the water and a scooper is provided to "flush" out the bowl. When this was first introduced to the region one often enter the facility to find the seat broken. Our Asian brothers hopped up on the seat for a squat. Step 2 was to teach them to lift the seat to squat graduating to the sitting-shitting posture. If you ever sat on one of these that had an unnoticed break you will understand the saying "bitten in the ass by the bog seat"

  This is a typical small town bog, a couple steps beyond a hole in the ground. Some have running water and some water must be delivered. This is the basic deal and generally torture for westerners. Make sure to have your own bog roll

The facilities here are clean and odorless and the locker room provides necessary security and showers

This place has been filthy for a while and should be avoided  if heading north out of Khon Kaen.

Pullman Royal Orchid Khon Kaen Bog

Okay it was clean and smelled nice but this is supposed to be a 5 star hotel. At least get the foot\shoe cleaner\polisher to do more than spin feebly

bog scientific

for years now I have been conducting a number of scientific projects. This one involves urinals. It so happens in many hotels and other venues there are 3 urinals in a row. I have observed (scientific word) that more than 70% of the time when a westerner enters and the place is empty they will use the urinal to the left or right while more than 70% of the time a Thai will use the middle urinal.
Any comments, ideas as to why. I think the westerner uses the end 1 is to enable the next person the other side with a space betweenand the Thai uses the center one....

This lovely bog is of the isaan retro modern style. These are found in modernized houses which once utilized the isaan squat style crapper. When you sit on one of these fine seats you do feal like royalty.
